Is anyone currently, or has anyone recently lived in Keesler base housing?  I start the Special Ops Weather course in June, and am bringing the wife and kids with me.  I'm just wanting to get some opinions on the quality of base housing versus off base.  Is it privatized housing?  Is it single family homes or duplexes?  If anyone has got any info on this, I'd appreciate it.

I'm here currently for the 1W0X1 course and be here until August. The housing on base is really really nice, I live in East Falcon Housing. I am here with my spouse and kid with 2 dogs and we got a 2 story, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, big ass kitchen/dining room and living room, 1 car garage, big laundry room, a fenced in back yard (kinda small though) and more closet and storage space than what we know what to do with. It is the best housing we have lived in so far. It is base housing but it is not on the actual base, it is about a 2 minute drive from the Pass Rd gate. The housing isn't privatized but all of the houses are brand new because they rebuilt EVERYTHING after the hurricane wiped everything out.

We have no actual complaints about housing other than that it has a fence around the perimeter but it isn't fully secure. Anybody can just drive in but they have constant security forces patrols (not the rent-a-cops) so there haven't been any instances......well none that I am aware of. The neighborhood is really quiet. Currently 90% of the houses that are to my left on both sides of the street have nobody living in them, it's about 50-60 houses just sitting there and have been for a while. It wouldn't really matter if you put in an application for housing early since you can just show up and get your house that day (we got ours about 2 hours later once we went back to the housing office) but you could always just send it in anyway.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Thanks a lot for all the info.  I think we'll end up going that route.  It sounds like it will be pretty convenient.  Once again, thank you.  This helped out a ton.

Dubble D,

Let me know if you have any problems with housing as you try to acquire a place to stay. The pipeline is still very new, so you may run into some roadblocks.

SR,

I just received my assignment rip today, so I should get orders soon.  When I do, I'll put in an advance application for housing.  I will let you know if I have any trouble.  Thanks a lot for the help.
